Google Issues Warning: Do Not Answer Calls from This Number
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Google has finally released a real-time Scam Detection feature for Pixel phone users. The feature works by monitoring call patterns typically associated with telephone scam attempts.
If the system recognises suspicious patterns, the phone will provide visual warnings to the user. A notification regarding suspicious activity will appear on the screen, complete with a button to immediately end the call or an option to mark it as non-fraudulent.
For example, if a caller claims to be from a bank and suddenly requests a money transfer, this feature will automatically process the conversation. The system then determines whether the call falls into the fraud category so that users can be more vigilant.
On the Pixel 9 series, Scam Detection is powered by Gemini Nano. This security feature is also available on Pixel 6-8a thanks to “Google’s robust on-device machine learning models”.
Google says that “no audio or conversation transcripts are stored on the device”. Everything is sent to Google servers or another location, or can be retrieved after the call.
This Scam Detection feature is also disabled by default, so users must enable it manually if they want to use it.
Users have control over turning off this feature through the Phone app settings, even during a specific call. Currently, the service is only available for public beta users using Google Pixel 6 or later models in the United States.
To activate it, go to Settings in the Google Phone app > Scam Detection.
To provide feedback on the user experience, click Google Phone App -> Menu -> Help & Feedback -> Send Feedback.
