Google Issues New Warning, Urges Older Android Users to Update Immediately
Technology giant Google has issued a warning for Android phone users following the discovery of a dangerous zero-day security flaw categorised as high-severity, threatening users of Android operating systems 14 to 16. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-48595, carries a severity score of 8.4. This weakness is considered highly critical as it allows illegal escalation of device access privileges without requiring additional execution rights, and even without any user interaction.
According to The Hacker News, Google acknowledged that this security flaw has already begun to be exploited in the real world on a limited and targeted basis. However, the Mountain View-based company declined to disclose specific details regarding the actors behind the attack, their primary targets, or the scale of exploitation that has occurred. Existing reports indicate that this system weakness could potentially be leveraged by commercial vendors to target high-profile individuals.
In response to the threat, Google moved swiftly by releasing two fix packages, specifically security patch levels 2026-06-01 and 2026-06-05. This update includes fixes to the core system as well as chipset components from major manufacturers such as Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Unisoc. The seriousness of the threat was also underscored by the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which has added the CVE-2025-48595 vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalogue and mandated all US federal civilian executive branch agencies to patch the flaw.
Citing Forbes, Android users are strongly advised to immediately perform an update once the security update notification becomes available on their respective devices. Installing the 2026-06-05 patch level is a mandatory step to ensure the device is fully protected from this exploitation threat. Android users can independently check for the availability of this update through the Settings menu on their respective smartphones and are urged not to delay for the sake of their personal data security.
