Google Introduces Video Selfie Option for Account Login

Google has introduced an option to log in using a video selfie as a new method to verify user identity. The feature is designed as an alternative for users who cannot access their primary device or are locked out of their accounts. To activate this login option, users are asked to record a video selfie following several instructions, such as moving their head to the right, left, or nodding, so the system can capture the face from various angles. If a user later has difficulty logging in, they can record a new video selfie. Google will then compare the new recording with the video stored during registration to confirm the user’s identity. The company stated that the feature is designed not only to recognise faces but also to ensure that the person in front of the camera is a real human being, not a photograph, manipulated video, or content created by deepfake technology. ‘When you use a selfie to log in, we use multiple layers of security to help prevent impersonation attempts like fake photos and deepfakes,’ Google said. The system matches the new video with the previously stored one while also asking the user to perform simple movements as proof that the video is being recorded live. Additionally, Google continues to apply standard security mechanisms to detect suspicious activity. The company confirmed that video selfies are stored securely using encryption and remain protected even when not in use. Users can also delete the video from their Google account at any time.
