Google has ensured that ChromeOS will continue to receive operating system and security updates until mid-2034, even as the company begins preparing for a transition to the Android-based Googlebook OS for next-generation laptops.

According to reports from Engadget on Monday (28/9) local time, Google had previously promised 10 years of support for Chromebook devices. This policy subsequently raised questions regarding the fate of Chromebooks still within their support period when Google introduces the new operating system.

Google explained that eligible devices purchased currently, whose 10-year support period extends beyond 2034, will still receive support to transition to Googlebook OS. “For eligible devices purchased currently where the 10-year support period extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting the transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering a direct migration path,” stated Google.

Google also noted that many of the latest Chromebooks will be eligible to use Googlebook OS. However, the company has not yet provided detailed information on how the migration process will be conducted and plans to release further details in the future.

In addition to general users, Google is also preparing support for enterprise and education sectors. Device management features for Googlebook OS for both user categories are scheduled to be available starting in the second half of 2027.

Google introduced Googlebook at the I/O developer conference held earlier this year. The company showcased its next generation of laptops last week, coinciding with the opening of the pre-order period. The first generation of Googlebook devices is scheduled to be available from 4 October. These laptops will utilise Googlebook OS, the Android-based operating system Google has prepared for its new generation of laptops.

Meanwhile, ChromeOS will be maintained for several years to come. Consequently, Chromebook users will not need to migrate to the new operating system immediately, as devices still within their support period will continue to receive updates until the deadline set by Google.
