Google Faces Talent Exodus as AI Researchers Depart for Rivals

The competition to develop artificial intelligence (AI) among US technology giants is intensifying, driving a fierce war for talent. Since last year, the transfer market for AI experts has been in the spotlight, with tech behemoths not hesitating to offer super-sized salaries to poach researchers from competitors. Most recently, senior AI research scientist John Jumper announced his plan to leave Google DeepMind to join Anthropic. His departure marks the latest wave of high-ranking figures fleeing Google. In 2024, Jumper won the Nobel Prize alongside Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis. Jumper is best known as the co-creator of AlphaFold, an AI breakthrough that predicts over 200 million protein structures, an innovation that has shaved years off medical and biological research timelines. “After nearly 9 years, I have decided to leave Google DeepMind to join Anthropic,” Jumper said in a post on X. Tech giants such as Meta, Alphabet, Anthropic, and OpenAI are locked in a fierce war for AI talent, competing for seasoned researchers to build the next generation of AI systems. “The demand for AI research talent is so high that leading AI research labs are willing to do whatever it takes to add to their ranks. This gives OpenAI and Anthropic an advantage over larger companies like Google because they can promise less bureaucracy and a more focused effort on developing superintelligence,” said D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria. Jumper’s sudden departure was announced just days after Noam Shazeer, VP of Engineering at Google and co-lead of the Gemini AI model, said he planned to leave the search giant to join OpenAI. According to his LinkedIn page, Jumper served as VP, Engineering Fellow, at Google DeepMind. He moves to Anthropic as the startup is engaged in a high-stakes legal and regulatory battle with the US government. Anthropic is set to host a science event on 30 June. The startup did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In his X post, Jumper described Google DeepMind as “a special place” and indicated his continued interest in its future discoveries. “We are grateful for John’s significant contributions to Google DeepMind’s work in advancing science and AI. We wish him the best in his next chapter,” a Google DeepMind spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed response.
