Google and YouTube Strengthen Digital Safety Features for Children and Adolescents

Google and YouTube continue to reinforce their commitment to creating a safe digital ecosystem for the younger generation. Through the development of various innovative features, the two platforms are striving to help parents assist their children in building responsible digital habits without having to limit their creative space.

Product Marketing Manager, Brand & Reputation for Google Indonesia, Dora Songco, affirmed that Google’s main principle is to protect, not restrict. This was conveyed at the “#AKSIDigital: Ruang Tumbuh Keluarga Indonesia” event held in Jakarta on Thursday (4/6).

“Our principle is to protect children and adolescents in the digital world, not to restrict them. We cannot deny the extraordinary development of the times, but the most important thing is how we remain present and supervise them within that digital world,” said Dora.

Google and YouTube recognise that the internet has become an inseparable part of children’s daily lives for learning, playing, and exploring. Therefore, the features presented are designed based on input from child development experts and educators to create an age-appropriate experience for users.

Dora added that building a healthy digital experience requires cross-sector collaboration, spanning technology, government, parents, and the community. One concrete step is the provision of more intuitive family control tools.

Beyond safety features, Google and YouTube are also focusing on content quality. Through initiatives such as the Akademi Edukreator, YouTube provides support to teachers and creators to build a safe, inclusive, and high-quality digital curriculum.

With this synergy between technology and active assistance from parents, it is hoped that Indonesian children can explore their interests online with a sense of safety and responsibility.
