Google AI Overview Now Displays Real Human Opinions and Reviews
As sophisticated as artificial intelligence (AI) machines are in summarising information from the internet, the answers they provide sometimes still feel too rigid. Ultimately, users often still seek advice, opinions, and direct experiences from real people. Recognising this limitation, Google has finally overhauled its flagship search feature, AI Overviews. This update is designed to make AI answers feel more “human” and rich in context. The main attraction of this update is the introduction of a new feature called “Expert Advice”. Through this update, AI Overviews no longer just spits out bullet points of standard information summaries, but also automatically presents direct advice from fellow internet users. This “Expert Advice” feature will be particularly useful when users ask very practical or specific questions, where testimonials from experienced individuals are far more valuable than mere theory. For example, when searching for food recommendations for a cat with a sensitive digestive system, AI Overviews will not only provide a general medical summary. This AI machine will now draw on experiences, solutions, and direct insights from fellow pet cat owners. Another example showcased by Google is when users search for tips on photographing the northern lights (aurora). Instead of just providing a definition, AI Overviews will present comments from online photography forums containing technical advice, such as the ideal camera exposure time, directly from seasoned photographers. To maintain transparency, each snippet will be displayed complete with the comment creator’s name or the related forum name, along with an active link. If clicked, the link will take users directly to the original discussion thread so they can read more or join the conversation. Google will now prioritise and highlight links to media or news sites that are user favourites. Google’s testing shows that users click much more frequently on news links explicitly labelled as their subscriptions. Considering AI’s vulnerability to hallucinations, Google now embeds reference links directly right next to the summary text. For instance, in a sentence discussing running routes in Bintaro, the original guide link will be embedded precisely next to that sentence. Functioning like a “read also” feature, Google has added a new section below the AI summary that presents recommendations for websites containing analytical articles or case studies from various perspectives on the same topic. “By increasing the visibility and usefulness of links and showcasing original voices, we are building AI in Search to help you discover the diversity of the web, connecting you directly with the sources and creators you seek,” Google stated in its official announcement, as compiled by KompasTekno from ZDNET.
