Google has officially declared its support for the Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, a transparency guideline for artificial intelligence drawn up by the European Union as part of the implementation of the AI Act. Google is committed to making AI-generated content easier for users to recognise through labelling and digital marking systems.

In its official statement, Google said this step is part of the company’s efforts to build a safe, transparent, and responsible AI ecosystem. The guidelines are designed to help technology companies meet the transparency obligations that will begin to be enforced under the EU AI Act in August 2026. One of the main points is providing clear information to users when they see or interact with content generated or modified using AI technology.

Google explained that the company has developed various technologies to support transparency, one of which is SynthID, a digital watermarking system that can be embedded in images, video, audio, and text. Unlike conventional watermarks, SynthID does not alter the visual appearance of content but stores digital information that can help identify its origin.

In addition to SynthID, Google also supports the implementation of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard. This standard enables various digital platforms to display information about the provenance of a piece of content, whether it was created manually or with the assistance of AI.

The European Union considers this transparency measure crucial, given the rapid growth of generative AI. Currently, AI technology can produce images, videos, audio, and articles with quality increasingly resembling human work. Without clear markers, the public may struggle to distinguish authentic content from synthetic material, including deepfakes that can be used to spread false information.

Google hopes that the implementation of AI regulations in the EU will still provide room for innovation so as not to hinder the development of new technologies. The company believes that balanced regulation will protect the public while encouraging the growth of the AI industry.

Meanwhile, the European Commission explained that the Code of Practice is voluntary but is designed as a practical guide for companies to meet the transparency obligations set out in the AI Act. Companies that follow the guidelines will have a clearer reference for implementing content labelling systems according to applicable standards.

The implementation of these rules is expected to have a positive impact on internet users. With labels or markers on AI content, the public will be able to identify the source of an image, video, or text before sharing or believing it. This step is hoped to improve digital literacy while reducing the spread of misinformation that exploits AI technology.

Looking ahead, transparency is predicted to become a key aspect of AI development. Not only in Europe, but various countries are also beginning to consider similar regulations to ensure that the use of AI continues to provide benefits without undermining public trust in information circulating in the digital space.
