According to AFP news agency, police stated that firefighters and rescue workers had cordoned off the crash site on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Pedestrians were evacuated from the busy city centre intersection, which is traversed by tens of thousands of vehicles every day.

“Eight people died and 35 others were injured,” Bangkok police chief Urumporn Koondejsumrit told AFP.

Photos on social media showed a train approaching a level crossing at moderate speed before hitting a bus, which immediately caught fire.

“The fire is now under control and we are working to remove the bodies,” said Urumporn.

The fire appeared to spread quickly.

“I didn’t dare look back to see if there were any victims,” said a witness who was near the intersection with her daughter, according to public broadcaster Thai PBS.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an investigation into the incident, according to a statement from his office.

Fatal traffic accidents are common in Thailand. The country often ranks high on lists of the world’s deadliest roads, with high speeds, drunk driving and weak law enforcement among the contributing factors.
