Jakarta — Bank Indonesia (BI) has confirmed that Japanese residents visiting Indonesia can now use QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) for payments.

The announcement was made by Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Filianingsih Hendarta during a press conference following a Board of Governors meeting on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

“Good news regarding cross-border QRIS with Japan — it has received a licence,” Hendarta stated. “In Japan, there was previously only one-way outbound service from Indonesia. Now permission has been granted, and there will be Japanese outbound services as well.”

“Japanese citizens coming to Indonesia can use QRIS at Indonesian merchants. So the QRIS connection with Japan is now complete,” she explained.

The implementation of cross-border QR payments between Indonesia and Japan commenced in August 2025.

With this development, citizens from both Japan and Indonesia no longer need to use cash for transactions in either country. Instead, they can simply scan QR codes for payment at retail shops.
