Golkar's Response to Proposal for Limiting Party Leader Terms
Golkar Party General Secretary Muhammad Sarmuji has responded to the proposal for limiting the term of political party leaders. According to him, his party has no objection to the discourse on restricting the general chairman’s position to just two terms.
This is because, according to him, leadership in the Golkar Party routinely changes. “Even up to now, there has not been a single person who has been able to complete two full terms (leading) in Golkar,” he stated on Friday, 24 April 2026.
However, Sarmuji assessed that the proposal to limit the term of the party general chairman is not the main issue. According to him, the issue of internal party democracy is more substantive to discuss.
He said that if the internal party environment implements quality democratic practices, it is not impossible that various ideas will emerge. “The party will not depend on one figure alone, but there will be many thoughts that can be absorbed,” said this Chairman of the Golkar Party Faction in the House of Representatives.
Previously, a study by the Corruption Eradication Commission’s Monitoring Directorate found at least four points of problems in political party governance. The four points are the absence of a roadmap for political education implementation, integrated cadre system standards, financial reporting systems, and supervisory institutions.
This anti-corruption agency also formulated several recommendations for improving political party governance. One of them is through revisions to Law Number 2 of 2011 on Political Parties, particularly Article 29 on political recruitment.
The study proposes the establishment of a limit on the leadership term of political party general chairmen. “To ensure the implementation of cadre development, regulation of the limit on the general chairman’s leadership term to a maximum of two periods of management is needed,” stated the KPK report on 20 April 2026.
