Golkar Secretary-General Urges NU Members to Internalise Qanun Asasi to Avoid Conflict
Jombang – Golkar Party Secretary-General Sarmuji has stated that the fundamental values of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) are the primary key to maintaining the organisation’s solidity. Strengthening this intellectual foundation is considered crucial so that all Nahdliyyin members always prioritise unity in every step they take.
Sarmuji made the remarks during a Halaqah Pemikiran Pesantren held on the sidelines of the 35th Nahdlatul Ulama Congress. He emphasised that the preamble to the Qanun Asasi, opened by KH Hasyim Asy’ari, begins with verses from Surah Al-Ahzab, verses 45-46, which describe the Prophet Muhammad as a witness, a bearer of glad tidings, a warner, a caller to the religion of Allah, and an illuminating lamp.
According to Sarmuji, the placement of these verses reflects the hope that NU will be present to bring values of goodness, provide joy to society, and serve as a light in the life of the nation. He added that KH Hasyim Asy’ari also stressed the importance of unity and the benefits of congregational action in the Qanun Asasi, serving as a reminder that the strength of the organisation lies in togetherness and collective movement.
“The Qanun Asasi is not merely a basic rule, but rather the raison d’être—the reason for the founding of Nahdlatul Ulama. It is both a foundation for thinking and a depiction of how NU should serve,” Sarmuji explained.
He added that a deep understanding of the Qanun Asasi is expected to keep NU members and administrators focused on unity. “If NU administrators truly internalise this Qanun Asasi, God willing, there will be no stories of NU members quarrelling or causing commotion. What will exist is an NU that keeps moving forward,” he said.
Sarmuji also expressed appreciation for the halaqah and the hosting of the 35th NU Congress at PPBU Tambakberas Jombang. He admitted to having an emotional connection with the pesantren tradition because his late mother was active in Muslimat NU. “I remember very well, she often recited: ‘Alhamdu utawi sekabehane puji, lillahi iku kagungane Allah, Rabbil ’alamina kang pengerane alam kabeh,’” Sarmuji said.
That experience was one of the reasons Sarmuji was pleased to attend the halaqah forum. He assessed that such cultural forums provide space for various parties, including political figures, to discuss the fundamental values of NU.
