Golkar Pushes for Discussion of Election Bill: Stages Should Begin at Year's End
Golkar Party Secretary-General M Sarmuji is pushing for the discussion of the Election Bill (RUU Pemilu) to begin immediately. Sarmuji reminded that the election stages will commence soon.
“Yes, from our perspective, if there are indeed to be changes, then the discussions should start as soon as possible,” said Sarmuji at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (16/4/2026).
He explained that the initial election stages are scheduled to begin at the end of this year. He stated that one of the crucial stages is the recruitment of election organisers, which requires a clear legal foundation.
“Because the election stages should already begin at the end of this year, namely the stage for recruiting election organisers. Of course, it’s impossible to conduct recruitment of election organisers without the law being finalised,” he said.
Sarmuji assessed that if the government and the DPR plan to revise the Election Law, the discussions must start immediately. According to him, this is to prevent any hindrance to the process.
“So if this law is indeed to be amended, we must start the discussions right away,” he added.
This Chairman of the Golkar Party Faction in the DPR RI assessed that the delay in starting discussions on the RUU Pemilu is likely influenced by various considerations, including the national situation currently facing several challenges.
“Of course there are many considerations, national considerations are certainly one of the factors,” he said.
“We are now facing problems that are not easy; there is energy resilience that must be secured, so focus must be placed there. Such matters could be considerations,” continued Sarmuji.
Nevertheless, his party does not take issue with whether the Election Law will be revised or not. However, Sarmuji emphasised that if changes are made, his party hopes for improvements in the regulations.
“For Golkar, we are ready either way; it’s fine if it’s not changed, and good if it is. But of course, we hope for refinements to this election law,” said Sarmuji.
“It would be best if changes are to be made. Because the stages must proceed soon,” he added.
