Jakarta, Kompas.com - The Golkar Party is pushing for the immediate start of discussions on the Election Bill (RUU Pemilu) if the House of Representatives (DPR RI) truly intends to revise it.

“If there are to be changes, it would be best to start the discussions as soon as possible,” said Golkar Party Secretary-General Sarmuji when met at the DPR RI Building on Thursday (16/4/2026).

Sarmuji stated that accelerating the discussions is necessary because the election stages are set to begin at the end of this year.

“Because the election stages should already start at the end of this year, namely the stage for recruiting election organisers. Of course, it’s impossible to conduct recruitment of election organisers without the law being finalised,” he said.

“So if this law is indeed to be amended, we must start the discussions immediately,” he continued.

“Of course, there are many considerations, including national considerations which will certainly be one of the factors,” he added.

“We are currently facing problems that are not easy; there is energy resilience that must be secured, so we must focus on that. Such matters could become considerations,” Sarmuji went on.

Nevertheless, Golkar in principle does not object to whether the Election Law will be amended or not. However, he hopes for refinements if a revision takes place.

“For Golkar, we are ready either way; it’s fine if it’s not amended, and it’s good if it is. But of course, we hope for some refinements to this election law,” said Sarmuji.

“It’s best if the changes are indeed to be made. Because the stages need to proceed promptly,” he concluded.

It was previously reported that DPR RI Speaker Puan Maharani stated that discussions on the Election Bill are still being communicated with party leaders.

“At the moment, we are still discussing it with the party leaders,” said Puan at the DPR RI Building on Thursday (16/4/2026).

Puan emphasised that the discussions aim to ensure that future elections run more effectively.
