Golkar Mourns Death of Try Sutrisno: A Cross-Generational Fighter

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The Golkar Party’s Secretary General M Sarmuji has conveyed the party’s deep sorrow over the death of the 6th Vice President Try Sutrisno.

Try Sutrisno was known to have been affiliated with Golkar during Indonesia’s New Order era.

“We express our deepest condolences on the passing of national figure General (Retired) Try Sutrisno,” Sarmuji told Kompas.com on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Sarmuji explained that Try Sutrisno was a cross-generational patriot who stood alongside Indonesia in facing various challenges.

“He was a cross-generational fighter who was given the opportunity to serve this nation through various challenges. He ensured that this nation remained faithful to the principles of Pancasila and the Indonesian Constitution of 1945,” he added.

The family stated that there was no particular illness that caused Try’s death. His son Taufik Dwi Cahyono mentioned that his father’s health declined due to his advanced age, having reached 90 years old.

“My father’s condition was due to his age; everything declines at that stage. There was no specific serious illness because of his advanced age — his respiratory capacity and such things simply deteriorated,” said Taufik at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto military hospital on Monday, as reported by Kompas TV.

Taufik explained that before his death, Try had been hospitalised at RSPAD since 16 February 2026 because he had temporarily lost his appetite for food.

Taufik stated that the RSPAD medical team and the presidential team had provided the best possible care to Try. However, on Monday morning, the family received news that Try’s health had deteriorated significantly and he had passed away.

“Everything possible was attempted here. Perhaps it was simply his time. Alhamdulillah, my father did not suffer from a prolonged or severe illness — it was simply due to his age,” Taufik said.
