Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has come under public scrutiny for his statement advising against wasting gas on stoves while cooking to save energy. The Golkar Party has explained the intent behind Bahlil’s remarks.

Golkar Party Secretary-General M Sarmuji initially stated that Bahlil’s comment was merely a reinforcement regarding the current situation. According to him, energy conservation is always advocated even in normal circumstances.

“Actually, this is just an emphatic appeal. Even in normal situations, we must save energy,” said Sarmuji when contacted on Friday (27/3/2026).

This Golkar Party Faction Chairman said that energy-saving appeals have also been made regarding electricity conservation. Therefore, he added, amid the current energy crisis, such appeals are being voiced again.

“We often receive similar appeals like ‘turn off the lights if not needed’. Especially now, when the potential burden of energy subsidies is increasing,” he said.

Sarmuji then specifically explained Bahlil’s statement ‘don’t waste the stove’. He mentioned that those usually in the kitchen understand better how to save on gas stoves.

“It’s just an example. Technically, kitchen practitioners understand how to do it better. And it’s not specifically about cooking. But also about electricity and other energy uses,” he stated.

Bahlil’s Statement

Previously, Bahlil urged the entire community to take conservation steps in facing the fuel crisis stemming from the Middle East conflict. Bahlil exemplified the importance of the public saving gas while cooking.

“I beg, I suggest that come on, we must use energy wisely. What is not necessary, I suggest not to. For example, say, if cooking with LPG, once the food is cooked, don’t waste the stove,” said Bahlil in Colomadu in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources YouTube broadcast, quoted on Friday (27/3).

This Golkar Party Chairman asked the public to be truly wise in using energy commodities. With that, he continued, Indonesia’s energy supply will be better.

“Because we really need the public’s help for us to together use energy wisely. If we can do this together, insyaallah our energy in the future will be even better,” he said.
