Golkar Begins Screening Potential Legislative Candidates for 2029 Elections by Year-End

Golkar Party Chairman Bahlil Lahadalia has revealed that the party is now beginning to assess the potential of legislative candidates for the 2029 General Election. He stated that this process is commencing so that by 2027, Golkar can already engage in political work. “By the end of this year, we will start calculating and inventorying the list of legislative candidates so that by 2027 we are already doing political work. Consolidation will be completed by 2026,” Bahlil said during his speech at the Golkar Party Academy Training of Trainers (TOT) event at the Golkar Party Central Executive Board (DPP) office in West Jakarta, Monday (3/8/2026).

Golkar Party Secretary General Sarmuji explained that there is a very large pool of potential legislative candidates to choose from. According to him, Golkar relies on individuals involved in the party’s infrastructure. “We have many organs within this party. The sources of legislative candidates are very numerous. First, of course, we rely on people who have been involved in the party infrastructure, DPP administrators, provincial DPD administrators, and district DPD administrators,” Sarmuji clarified to reporters on the sidelines of the Golkar Party Academy Training of Trainers event.

In addition to those involved in party management, Sarmuji mentioned that individuals involved in Golkar’s wing organisations could also be potential legislative candidates. He also noted that other Golkar networks could serve as sources for candidates. “We can also source from mass organisations affiliated with Golkar. We can also source from other Golkar networks,” he said.

Sarmuji stated that Golkar is currently training prospective legislative members through cadre development programmes such as the ongoing TOT event. It is hoped that the cadres participating in this event will later possess the competence to carry out their duties as legislative members. “But what we are ensuring today is that all prospective legislative members, both for the national DPR RI and regional levels, must undergo the cadre training organised by the Golkar Party. And this is the beginning. This TOT is the starting point. We want Golkar members who become public officials to be those with competence, not just electoral competence to seek votes, but competence in carrying out their duties when they become public officials, whether in the executive or legislative branches,” he said.
