Golkar aims at 30 percent of votes
YOGYAKARTA: Former president Soeharto's Golkar Party, the second largest faction in the House of Representatives, aims to garner 30 percent of total votes in the 2004 elections.
"In next year's elections, we expect to take 30 percent of the votes, or at least maintain the 24 percent of votes gained by the party in the 1999 election," Golkar chairman Akbar Tandjung said on Sunday.
He said Golkar would offer various programs to convince the people to vote for the party, including poverty eradication by making the economy grow and luring investment.
Golkar would also improve the people's awareness of democracy to help build a civil society, he told his supporters while celebrating the party's 39th anniversary in Wates, Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta. --Antara
