Golden Year: Not Javanese tradition
Golden Year: Not Javanese tradition
From Kompas
In a letter published in Kompas on Aug. 14, 1995 entitled 50 Tahun Sama Dengan Emas (50 years is identical to gold), it was said that the Javanese celebrate their 50th anniversary of their marriage as a golden marriage. To the best of my knowledge, and as a Javanese myself, observing the 50th anniversary of a marriage is not Javanese tradition. But there is nothing wrong with any Javanese or other Indonesians celebrating the 50th anniversary of their marriage as a golden anniversary, which is in fact a Western tradition.
The British "jubilee" or the Dutch "jubilum" is used to mark the 25th anniversary (silver jubilee) and the 50th anniversary (golden jubilee) and the 60th anniversary (diamond jubilee) which apply to any event such as marriage, establishment of a company or an organization. And Independence Day is no exception.
