Golden Gloves boxing postponed

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association has postponed the Golden Gloves championships from June to November to give host Dili, East Timor ample time to prepare for such a major event.

Sukendar Widjaja, secretary general of the East Timor boxing governing body, said yesterday the four-month delay, announced by the association over the weekend, would help the organizers over come their financial problem prior to the annual boxing meet.

Dili, which will play host to the event for the first time, has to collect at least Rp 110 million (about US$50,000) out of the set budget of Rp 170 million ($76,600). The National Sports Council will donate Rp 50 million ($22,500), while the rest will come from the association.

"The more time we have, the better our services and our chance to become the overall championships title winner," Sukendar said, reported Antara. (amd)
