Gold Mine Martabe, Temporarily Halted, to Resume Operations in May 2026
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Astra Group-listed company PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR) has stated that the Martabe gold mine, owned by PT Agincourt Resources in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, will resume operations in May 2026.
United Tractors’ President Director, Iwan Hadiantoro, said that the company is currently preparing mining operations and contractors at the Martabe mine. This includes recalling employees who were previously laid off due to the temporary halt in mine operations some time ago.
“Mid-May should already be operational, and if we can operate then, the target is around 60,000 ounces,” Iwan revealed during a public expose in Jakarta on Thursday (16/4/2026).
Following the reopening, the company is committed to improving quality, safety aspects, and environmental standards. This also includes cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
For this year, UNTR has budgeted capital expenditure (capex) of US$850 million. However, the company is open to reviewing the amount in line with revisions to the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB).
Previously, the gold mine was listed among 28 companies indicated to have violated environmental regulations, causing floods in North Sumatra.
On another occasion, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung explained that the decision to operate the Martabe gold mine was based on the results of an evaluation by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH) on the environmental management carried out by the company.
The evaluation results showed that the environmental management by PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) has met the requirements for sustainable mining practices. Consequently, the previously imposed sanctions have been lifted.
“Based on the evaluation conducted by KLH on the relevant environmental management, it meets the requirements for sustainable mining management, and the imposition of sanctions has been revoked,” Yuliot said to CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (26/3/2026).
With the revocation of the sanctions, the company can resume production activities in accordance with the provisions of the applicable Contract of Work (KK) until 2042.
Regarding the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB), PTAR can still carry out production in accordance with the RKAB for the 2025-2027 period. In addition, the company can also submit an RKAB for 2026 in parallel.
“For the relevant RKAB, production can be carried out according to the 2025-2027 RKAB, and in parallel, submit the 2026 RKAB,” he stated.
