Godean Youth Steals Neighbour's Safe to Fund Marriage Proposal
A young man from Godean, Sleman, identified by the initials BI (24), stole a safe belonging to his neighbour containing Rp 13.5 million in cash. It was revealed that the perpetrator needed the money for a marriage proposal and to pay off a Paylatter bill.
Godean Police Chief AKP Rusdiyanto explained that the theft occurred on Saturday (20/6) at the home of the victim, HP (50), in Jering Hamlet, Sidorejo, Godean, Sleman. The victim and the perpetrator are neighbours from different neighbourhood units (RT).
The night before the incident, the perpetrator was hanging out at the victim’s house and ended up staying overnight. In the morning, the perpetrator was woken by the victim’s wife and invited to breakfast. It was at that moment the perpetrator glanced into the victim’s bedroom and saw the safe.
“On his way to the back, the perpetrator is suspected of passing the victim’s bedroom, which was open at the time. So it is suspected that the perpetrator saw the safe in the room,” Rusdiyanto explained in a written statement received by detikJogja on Friday (3/7).
After breakfast, the victim and his wife left the house. The perpetrator also left, on the pretext of dropping off a friend. However, after dropping off his friend, the perpetrator returned to the victim’s house.
“After returning to the victim’s house, he immediately jumped in through a window, took the safe, and fled with it,” Rusdiyanto stated.
Having successfully made off with the safe, the perpetrator cut open the back of the black Krisbow-brand safe, measuring 30x20 cm, using a grinder, then pried it open with an iron bar. Inside the safe, the perpetrator found a motorcycle registration document (BPKB), a savings book, and Rp 13,500,000 in cash.
“The perpetrator took the money from the safe. However, the BPKB and savings book were put back into the safe, which the perpetrator then threw into a river in the Krajan area, Sidoluhur, Godean,” Rusdiyanto revealed.
The victim, upon discovering the safe was missing, reported it to the police. Based on witness reports, the police moved quickly to track down the perpetrator’s whereabouts. It did not take long; by Saturday (20/6) afternoon, the perpetrator was apprehended at his residence.
From the investigation, the perpetrator admitted to his actions. Economic motives were the reason the perpetrator resorted to committing the theft.
“The perpetrator has admitted that Rp 13,500,000 was used to pay a Shopee bill of Rp 800,000, with the remaining Rp 12,700,000 kept by the perpetrator,” said Rusdiyanto.
The remaining money was to be used by the perpetrator for the marriage proposal. The perpetrator also told police this was his first criminal offence. For his actions, the perpetrator is charged under Article 476 of the New Criminal Code Number 1 of 2023, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.
“The perpetrator’s motive was economic. The money was to be used for a planned marriage proposal event. He had not yet proposed; it was still a plan,” Rusdiyanto concluded.
