Goat Traders in Denpasar Struggle as Eid al-Adha Approaches; Only 20 Goats Sold

Livestock traders in Denpasar are lamenting weak demand for goats ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026, which falls on Wednesday, 27 May 2027. In previous years, demand for sacrificial animals had already picked up from six days before Eid al-Adha.

One goat trader on Jalan Ahmad Yani, Denpasar, Rezky Setiawan, said this year’s figures show a decline compared with last year.

“It’s still quiet. Last year, on H-6 or H-5, buyers started to come in. This year it’s still quiet, perhaps due to the economy as well,” Rezky told detikBali on Wednesday, 21 May 2026.

Owner of the O’Conk pen, Rezky says goat selling is his daily livelihood, not a seasonal trading. He typically stocks 70 goats and starts selling a month before Eid al-Adha.

The goats for sale include Etawa breed, imported from Gobleg, Buleleng, and Bedugul, Tabanan. In addition to buyers from around Denpasar, Rezky also serves customers from Uluwatu, Tabanan, and Gianyar.

“Those from far away come from Uluwatu, Tabanan, Gianyar. There are also 8 to 10 regular customers,” he said.

However, of the 70 goats prepared, a week before Eid al-Adha Rezky said only 20 had sold.

“Only 20 goats sold so far. At most two or three goats sell in a day,” he added.

Prices for the goats vary according to size. For large goats, the price is Rp 5 million and above; for medium, Rp 3-4 million; and for small, Rp 2-2.5 million.

Similar complaints were raised by other sacrificial animal traders. Karim, a goat seller on Jalan Marzuki, Denpasar, says that consumer purchasing power has declined compared to Eid al-Adha in previous years.

He, who sells goats daily, has only earned around Rp 15 million for this Eid al-Adha. This contrasts with previous years when it had already been busy a week before Eid al-Adha.

“Only around Rp 15 million so far, quiet on most days; on H-6 it used to be busy,” Karim said.

Detikbali observations show several goat-pen stalls lined up along Jalan Ahmad Yani from near Kampung Jawa to Jalan Marzuki, Denpasar Utara.
