Goat-Seller Stalls on Central Jakarta Sidewalk Cleared after Going Viral
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Tanah Abang district head, Dwiarti Indriani Utami, said that the sidewalk spot that went viral on Jalan KH Mas Mansyur in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, has been tidied up.
On Wednesday (20 May 2026), goat-sale stalls on the sidewalk in front of the Daihatsu dealer at Karet Tengsin were highlighted for taking up almost the entire footpath.
The stalls sit immediately beside Jalan Karet Pasar Baru Barat and near the Karet Bivak Public Cemetery (TPU). According to Utami, authorities have also explained to the traders due to the short selling window ahead of Eid al-Adha.
Meanwhile, the existence of sales at other locations, such as the sidewalk near Thamrin City, Kebon Kacang, and Tanah Abang, has been allowed. She said that the trade in sacrificial animals at several points in Tanah Abang has become a yearly routine and forms part of the local wisdom of residents.
βFor the Tanah Abang area, indeed many work as goat traders,β Utami said. One reason is to curb street extortion, as there is a chance to earn by selling.
Earlier, as reported by an Instagram account @jakpus.terkini, the presence of goat stalls, besides occupying the pavement, was also complained about by residents for allegedly spreading a odour.
At the goat stalls, prospective buyers could be seen looking over the goats, so the pavements were increasingly crowded and difficult for pedestrians to pass.
