Glodok Plaza saved from fire gutting
JAKARTA (JP): Puspo Adiyuwono, the Managing Director of PT Multi Plaza Properties, said yesterday that Glodok Plaza, a shopping center managed by the company, was not damaged by a fire last Saturday.
Puspo said the building affected by the fire was Plaza 21, which houses a cinema complex, a number of restaurants and stores selling a wide variety of electronics goods.
Puspo said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post that the building was not affected by the huge fire on Saturday afternoon which damaged the second floor of the Plaza 21 building attached to Glodok Plaza.
Due to the close position of the two buildings it is difficult for outsiders to differentiate the one belonging to Glodok Plaza from the other, Plaza 21.
Puspo said the fire was extinguished by officers of the West Jakarta fire department with the help of employees, security guards and cleaning service attendants of Glodok Plaza.
"Our employees could help prevent the fire from spreading to the Glodok Plaza building because of the intense fire drills frequently held between the city fire department and the company, as well as the top condition of its fire precaution devices, which were also major factors in saving the building."
Puspo said Glodok Plaza reopened to the public, business as usual, only one day after the fire gutted Plaza 21.
"In greeting Christmas and the New Year, 1995, we are holding a computer exhibition on the second floor and Christmas bazaar in the main hall," he said. (mas)
