Global Trust in Trump and US Reliability Declines Sharply, Including in Indonesia

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center indicates that global confidence in US President Donald Trump remains low and continues to weaken, with Indonesia among the countries showing a sharp decline in positive assessment. The findings, released on Tuesday (23/6), also point to a broader negative image of the United States internationally, with only 37 percent of respondents holding a favourable view and 57 percent expressing a negative opinion. Indonesia is listed alongside Italy, Nigeria, South Africa, and South Korea as one of the 15 nations where the US’s image has significantly deteriorated. Approximately two-thirds of those surveyed stated they have little or no confidence in Trump’s ability to handle international affairs. The data shows trust in Trump has decreased in 16 of the 24 countries polled, with no country registering an increase. The decline is particularly pronounced among long-standing US allies. In Canada, the percentage of respondents who view the US as a reliable partner plummeted from 83 percent in 2022 to just 35 percent currently. Similarly, in Germany, the share of people who believe the US considers other countries’ interests in its foreign policy dropped from 60 percent in 2023 to 23 percent.
