Global Sumud Flotilla ships intercepted by Israel as Indonesia coordinates with Jordan and Turkey

Foreign Minister (FM) Sugiono confirmed the safety of a number of Indonesian citizens taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian convoy, which has been intercepted and detained by Israeli military authorities. Efforts to gather information on the ground remain hampered by limited communications. ‘We have therefore been in contact with colleagues at the Foreign Ministry in Jordan and Turkey to verify the condition of colleagues who were intercepted and detained by Israel. So far the information we have received is still difficult due to limited communications,’ Sugiono told reporters at the Indonesian Parliament Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. Sugiono expressed appreciation and respect for the volunteers, activists, and Indonesian journalists involved in the peace mission. He said the bravery of the delegations reflects Indonesia’s solidarity with the humanitarian crisis in Palestine. ‘We appreciate the spirit of those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla, as this reflects a desire to create a better situation for our brothers and sisters in Palestine, particularly Gaza. This is an attitude that deserves appreciation. We hope they are safe,’ Sugiono said. Given Indonesia does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel, Sugiono explained that the Foreign Ministry relies on a network of third-party diplomacy. He said the ministry is coordinating intensively with allied countries whose citizens were also among the victims of the interdiction, and maximising the role of diplomatic representatives in Jordan and Turkey. ‘We will continue to coordinate because we have no direct relationship. So we call upon our colleagues who have faced similar situations, from their own citizens, and from our colleagues in Jordan and Turkey,’ he added. Furthermore, Sugiono asked Indonesians to pray that all domestic delegates held in international waters will be freed and return home safely. ‘We pray that they are in good condition and can return home to Indonesia soon, in good health and safety,’ he concluded.
