Global Rice Prices Quietly Rise, Why Is Agriculture Minister Amran Grateful?

Global rice prices have continued their upward trend. Based on Trading Economics data, the world rice price in today’s trading was recorded at US$13.75 per quintal. This position is higher than on 23 June 2026, when it stood at US$12.48 per quintal, after rising 2.21% to reach its highest level in more than a week.

Amid the rise in global rice prices, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman admitted he is not worried. According to him, Indonesia’s situation is different because the current domestic rice supply is abundant with very large stockpiles, keeping prices stable.

"Rice prices, but ours are stable, Alhamdulillah. Why? Our rice is in surplus and our stockpiles are plentiful, very large. World prices are rising, Alhamdulillah," Amran said when met at the University of North Sumatra in Medan on Wednesday (15/7/2026).

Amran stated that the stability of domestic food prices is one of the government’s achievements amid global pressures. "This is Mr President’s achievement, rice prices are stable while world prices are rising, possibly due in part to the Strait of Hormuz situation," he said.

Furthermore, Amran revealed that Indonesia actually sees an opportunity amid the rise in global rice prices. According to him, several countries have expressed interest in importing rice from Indonesia. However, the government is still conducting discussions regarding the possibility of such exports. "Oh yes, certainly (the Indonesian government is seizing the opportunity). Because several countries have requested to import (rice from Indonesia). For now, negotiations are still ongoing," Amran concluded.
