Global Oil Prices Remain High as Markets Await Certainty in US-Iran Negotiations

Global oil prices remain a primary focus for global markets in early June 2026. Following a sharp surge in previous trading sessions, crude oil prices have held at high levels amid uncertainty regarding negotiations between the United States and Iran, as well as the future of the strategic Strait of Hormuz shipping lane.

Market participants are currently weighing conflicting signals concerning the potential for a ceasefire agreement and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. During trading on Tuesday, 2 June 202lar, Brent crude futures rose slightly by 6 cents, or 0.06 per cent, to US$95.04 per barrel. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by 17 cents, or 0.18 per cent, to US$91.99 per barrel.

Despite the relatively flat movement, both benchmarks previously surged by more than 5 per cent in a single trading session. This spike was driven by market concerns regarding global oil supplies amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions. US President Donald Trump stated that he had not received information indicating that Iran had ceased talks with Washington. He also noted that Israel had approved the withdrawal of troops that were previously prepared for an attack in southern Lebanon.

These statements follow conflicting reports regarding the status of negotiations. On Monday, Trump stated that talks with Iran were ongoing; however, the Tasnim news agency in Iran reported that Tehran had halted indirect negotiations with Washington. In a separate interview with CNBC, Trump remarked that he would not mind if negotiations ended, but shortly thereafter, he reaffirmed via social media that discussions were still underway. Trump also told ABC News that he expects an agreement to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz within the coming week. Market attention is now focused on whether US-Iran negotiations can achieve tangible progress or encounter new obstacles, with traders closely monitoring statements from both parties, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz and tanker activity in the region.
