Global Grocer eyes Thailand

BANGKOK (AFP): Thailand will be the first stop in a Singapore firm's plan to expand its online grocery store throughout the region, the company said Saturday.

The GlobalGrocer.com, which offers 10,000 products to Internet shoppers, has forged an alliance with CRC Ahold Co. Ltd., the operator of Tops supermarkets, to bring the service to Thailand.

"The Global Grocer has entered into an agreement with Tops ... to offer sauces, spices, condiments, juices and other non- perishable grocery products from Thailand for worldwide delivery," said chief executive Glenn Behrman in a statement.

Behrman said the company planned to tie up with other Thai food product companies and launch a second website devoted exclusively to Thai food.

The company was also searching for partners in Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, China and Japan as part of a regional expansion strategy, he said.

Behrman said the GlobalGrocer would begin testing online shopping kiosks in airports and Tops supermarkets in Bangkok and Chiang Mai in early 2000.
