Global grant for Dompu livestock development to begin in September
The Global Environment Facility (GEF)-8 Food Systems Integrated Program (FSIP) Livestock grant programme for the development of sustainable livestock systems in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), will begin implementation in September 2026.
Head of the Dompu Regency Livestock and Animal Health Service, Ilham, said Dompu is one of five regions in Indonesia targeted by the programme, which is implemented through collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the central government, and the regional government.
“At the beginning of September 2026, the programme will commence and run until 2031,” he said.
He said the programme is directed at building an integrated, sustainable, environmentally friendly livestock system capable of improving the welfare of farmers.
“This programme focuses on livestock breeding, livestock cultivation, animal health, agribusiness and distribution,” he added.
According to Ilham, implementation in the first year will be directed more towards capacity building and human resource empowerment as a foundation for livestock business development in subsequent stages.
“The first year will focus on human resource empowerment, then the second and third years will focus more on livestock development,” he said.
The GEF-8 FSIP Livestock programme is part of efforts to transform food systems to be more sustainable, resilient to climate change, inclusive and low in pollution.
The approach encourages a shift from conventional, fragmented livestock systems towards integrated livestock systems that take into account production, value chains, the environment and governance.
Nationally, the GEF-8 FSIP Livestock Indonesia project has received grant support of approximately Rp237.2 billion for the 2026-2031 period.
The programme covers the development of integrated livestock practices across an area of approximately 275,000 hectares spread across West Nusa Tenggara, Lampung and East Kalimantan.
In addition to Dompu Regency, the programme targets Sumbawa Regency in West Nusa Tenggara, Paser Regency in East Kalimantan, and Central Lampung and South Lampung Regencies in Lampung Province.
The programme targets improving the welfare of around 50,000 farming families and reducing and absorbing emissions of more than 10.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
Ilham said the programme also encourages strengthening value chains and market access, improving farmer capacity, innovation, access to financing, and the involvement of business actors.
Smallholder farmer groups, women and vulnerable groups are also part of the programme’s targets so that the benefits of livestock system development can be felt more widely.
He expressed hope that the programme can strengthen the livestock business ecosystem in Dompu from upstream to downstream, thereby not only increasing livestock productivity but also boosting farmers’ incomes and economic resilience.
Through the development of a more integrated and sustainable livestock system, the programme is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of livestock businesses while supporting efforts to reduce environmental impacts and climate change.
