Global Energy Crisis: Public Urged to Conserve Fuel Use

Jakarta, VIVA – The National Energy Council (DEN) has called on the public to immediately implement massive energy efficiency measures, particularly for fuel oil (BBM), to anticipate the impacts of global geopolitical uncertainties, especially the conflict in the Middle East that has sparked a worldwide energy crisis.

National Energy Council member Satya Widya Yudha stressed that the key to reducing Indonesia’s dependence on imported fuel oil (BBM) lies in changing lifestyles in energy consumption, thereby making the country less vulnerable to such international crises.

“We are asking the public to practise efficiency. This means driving vehicles efficiently by using efficient methods to maximise public transport usage. That already reduces consumption. For those who can afford it, please use electric vehicles properly,” said Satya at an energy seminar titled ‘Energy Transition Amid Global Geopolitical Disruptions’ at the ITB Campus in Bandung, West Java, quoted on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.

He explained that by independently curbing BBM consumption, the country’s import burden can be significantly reduced. “In this way, BBM consumption can be greatly suppressed. Our dependence on imports will certainly decrease,” he stated.

Nevertheless, DEN notes that Indonesia’s current energy resilience is still at a safe level with an index score of 7.13 out of 10. At present, national operational BBM reserves are recorded at between 21 and 28 days.

The government has also ensured a strong legal framework through Government Regulation No. 40 of 2016 to handle energy crisis and emergency conditions if extreme supply disruptions occur at any time.

As a long-term anticipatory measure on the upstream side, the government continues to strive to increase national energy reserves through accelerating domestic energy source production, developing new oil and gas fields, and advancing alternative energy to strengthen national energy independence amid global disruption threats.
