An astonishing photograph captured by the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii invites us to look as if into a cosmic crystal ball. The image shows the Crystal Ball Nebula, or NGC 1514, a planetary nebula situated about 1,500 light-years from Earth in the Taurus constellation.

Although it bears the name ‘planetary nebula’, this astronomical object has nothing to do with exoplanets. The designation was given purely because its shape is roughly spherical.

The structure forms when a star begins to shed its outer layers in the late stages of its life, creating a round or near-round form that can resemble a planet when viewed through a telescope.

In the case of NGC 1514, the nebula is actually a pair of stars orbiting one another every nine years. According to NOIRLab, the US National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab, which operates the Gemini North telescope, one of the stars began to shed its outer layers as it approached its death.

“Scientists believe that one of these stars, which was once several times more massive than our Sun, shed its outer layers while in its death throes,” NOIRLab wrote in a statement accompanying the image. “As the progenitor star and its binary companion orbited one another, they formed a gas envelope that expanded with their strong, and asymmetric, winds, forming the dense shell we see today.”

Beyond reminding us of the beauty of objects in the universe, the image of the Crystal Ball Nebula also reminds us that gazing far into space is the same as looking back in time. Because the light from this planetary nebula takes about 1,500 years to reach Earth, what we see today is a portrait of those stars in the past. If the crystal ball in the realm of divination is used to glimpse the future, this cosmic Crystal Ball serves as a unique window into the history of the universe.
