GKB-NU Urges Public Not to Be Easily Provoked, Asks for Chance for Prabowo

The Nahdlatul Ulama New Awakening Movement (GKB-NU) has urged the Indonesian public to remain calm, patient, and not easily provoked by narratives deemed potentially divisive to national unity. GKB-NU initiator Hery Haryanto Azumi stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s administration is currently implementing various strategic programmes oriented towards the people’s interests. These programmes, he said, encompass strengthening food security, energy sovereignty, downstreaming natural resources, and bolstering the national economy. ‘GKB-NU assesses that President Prabowo Subianto’s administration is currently carrying out various strategic programmes oriented towards the people’s interests,’ Hery told journalists in Jakarta on Thursday, 11 June 2026. According to Hery, these programmes require time, consistency, and national stability so that the benefits can be optimally felt by the public. He therefore urged the public not to rush to conclusions or be easily influenced by narratives that could undermine trust in the legitimate government. Hery also reminded that in the history of several developing nations, agendas for strengthening economic, food, and energy sovereignty, as well as control over strategic resources, often face opposition from various interests that feel disadvantaged. Consequently, the public is asked to remain vigilant against the possibility of certain parties, both domestic and foreign, seeking to exploit national political dynamics to obstruct the nation’s self-reliance agenda. Nevertheless, Hery affirmed that criticism of the government is a right guaranteed within a democratic system. However, he said the public must be able to distinguish between constructive criticism and actions that could potentially create political instability or disrupt national unity. ‘Criticism of the government is a right guaranteed in democracy. However, the people must be able to differentiate between constructive criticism and efforts that could potentially create political instability, weaken national unity, or disrupt programmes aimed at improving the people’s welfare,’ he stated. Hery further stressed that all political aspirations must be conveyed through mechanisms consistent with the constitution and the principles of the rule of law. He maintained that any change in national leadership must remain within the applicable democratic corridors.
