GIZ allocates 20 million euros for marine conservation, including in Indonesia

Nusa Dua, Bali — The German International Cooperation agency, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is preparing an investment fund worth 20 million euros to strengthen marine conservation in several countries, including Indonesia, between 2026 and 2031.

“We will partner with the first mover countries of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement, including Indonesia,” said Yuliana Cahya Wulan, GIZ Indonesia and ASEAN Commission Manager for Living High Seas, during the commemoration of World Oceans Day and the Coral Triangle in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali, on Sunday.

In addition to Indonesia, she continued, the partner countries of the German Federal Government include Senegal, Brazil, and Micronesia.

She explained that the investment value for the Living High Seas project is planned to be disbursed starting in 202<0xA0>26 in the form of technical support and other resources through the International Climate Initiatives programme, as part of Germany’s initial commitment to supporting the implementation of the BBNJ agreement.

For this project, the agency will focus on Area-Based Management Tools (ABMT), including Marine Protected Areas (MPA).

Several efforts will be undertaken within the Living High Seas project, namely assisting partner countries, including Indonesia, in collecting scientific data, particularly in BBNJ areas located outside the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) or beyond the 200-nautical-mile limit (the high seas).

She explained that such data is crucial given that these maritime regions are vulnerable, as they are accessible to all, including exploitation by large vessels operating without supervision.
