'Give Myanmar's premier a chance'

MALAYSIA: A United Nations special envoy urged the global community on Monday to give Myanmar's new prime minister a chance to work out a promised road map to national elections and a new government.

Razali Ismail's comments came a day after protesters across Asia demanded the release of Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, as she marked 100 days in detention on Sunday.

The UN envoy said he hopes to visit Myanmar "as soon as possible" and speak to the new premier, Gen. Khin Nyunt, about his recently announced road map to an elected government in Myanmar.

Suu Kyi, winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, has been detained at an undisclosed location since her arrest after a May 30 clash between her supporters and a pro-government mob in northern Myanmar. --AP
