Girl's dead body identified

JAKARTA (JP): Police have identified the 10-year-old girl found dead in the bushes of Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Monday as Nurhayati.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna told reporters yesterday that Nurhayati, also known as Upi, was a resident of Kemayoran Barat, Central Jakarta.

The parents came to the Cipto Mangunkusumo public hospital yesterday after reading newspaper reports about the discovery of a girl's dead body.

The parents told the police that Nurhayati left home on Sunday, Jan. 7, for unknown reasons.

The area where the body was found was also inundated due to the recent downpours. When the water subsided on Monday local residents who wanted to go fishing found the girl lying face up in the bushes.

She was only wearing a t-shirt when found, said Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna. "There was a wound, believed to be from a blunt object, in her head. Her lips were also swollen," he said.

Police have yet to determine if the girl was murdered. (bsr)
