Girl without anus undergoes surgery

SEMARANG, Central Java: Surgeons have successfully made an
artificial anus for seven-year-old Astriani, a press report said
yesterday.

The girl, from a village in Temanggung, underwent the medical
operation at the Dr. Kariadi general hospital in the city on
Tuesday.

Doctor Yulianto, who led the team of surgeons, said the two-
hour medical operation went without difficulties, Antara news
agency reported.

Astriani, an elementary school student, had defecated through
her vagina since her birth in 1987.

Yulianto said his patient's artificial anus was expected to
start functioning in a week.(rms)
