Girl killed by hit-and-run truck

JAKARTA (JP): A 17-year-old schoolgirl was crushed to death by a speeding trailer truck in a hit-and-run accident on Jl. Raya Cakung-Cilincing in East Jakarta early Tuesday.

The victim, Siska Indriyani, a resident of Kampung Kayu Tinggi in Cakung, was about to cross the busy road when the juggernaut coming from Tanjung Priok port hit her.

Siska, the eldest of three children, died instantly.

"We only recognized her school uniform and her bag," Nurli, a relative of the victim, said.

Siska, who left her house at 5 a.m., was supposed to deliver fried bananas and other homemade snacks to cafeterias along the road before she went to school, Nurli said.

Nurli said that Siska had become the family's backbone since her father left three years ago.

"Her mother is still unconscious (in shock) and we don't know her father's whereabouts."

He added that all her funeral expenses would be borne by his family.

"We don't know how Siska's mother will live from now with her two small children," he said, adding that Siska's younger brothers were only seven and three years old.

Nurli's family plans to bury the teenager at the Budi Dharma Public Cemetery in North Jakarta. (emf)
