Giri Prasta on Pesanggaran Waste-to-Energy Rejection: There is No Reason Not to Support It
Bali Deputy Governor I Nyoman Giri Prasta has requested that the community support the development of the Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) project on land owned by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) in Pesanggaran, South Denpasar. He stated that the cooperation process for the project has been finalised and is now moving into the implementation phase.
“We believe the cooperation matters are settled, and a decision has been made; therefore, all parties should support it. There is no longer any reason not to support it,” Giri said at the Bali Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) office on Monday (18/05/2026).
Giri explained that the PSEL facility will not merely stockpile waste; instead, it will process waste into electricity, functioning much like a factory. He added that waste processed in the morning could be completed by the afternoon. “This can even benefit the community, but we must be patient for now,” Giri noted.
He also mentioned that the public will receive education regarding waste management and sorting, which is intended to change community habits. “In the future, we will be able to see waste as a blessing, seeing waste as a source of revenue,” the former Regent of Badung added.
Giri further assured that there would be no more waste trucks congesting traffic. The logistics scheme will be modified, reducing the number of trucks from three to just one during specific delivery windows. “This way, waste will no longer be scattered on the roads; it will go directly into the facility to be processed,” he concluded.
Previously, residents of the Pesanggaran neighbourhood in Pedungan, Denpasar, rejected the PSEL project on Pelindo land. Residents even sent a letter of rejection to President Prabowo Subianto on Monday (29/12/2025). The letter, issued by the Pesanggaran Banjar, requested the cessation of the PSEL construction and opposed the issuance of environmental and business permits, instead advocating for safer and more participatory waste management solutions.
“Actually, the community does not reject government programmes regarding waste management. That is indeed our goal. However, the community wants the PSEL not to be built in a new location. If possible, why not the old site? Since the fuel for PSEL is waste, the old site already has the necessary material,” said the Head of the Pesanggaran Neighbourhood, Putu Gedhe Suciptha, when interviewed.
