Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - A video of giraffes braving a storm has gone viral on social media. The video has captured attention as many netizens have only just realised that their large size prevents giraffes from seeking shelter during bad weather.

In the video, taken in Masai Mara, Kenya, several giraffes are seen standing in harsh weather. Amidst the storm, the giraffes, which can reach up to 5.5 metres in height, can only stand upright, enduring the strong winds and heavy rain. They cannot take shelter under trees or behind rocks.

An expert from Taronga Zoo in Sydney, quoted by news.com.au, explained that giraffes also cannot make themselves smaller by sitting or lying down during a storm.

“Standing is the safest position for giraffes. Due to their unique and large body shape, sitting makes them vulnerable because giraffes need a considerable amount of time to stand up,” said Renae Moss from Taronga Zoo.

In a standing position, giraffes are also in the best position to observe their surroundings.

“Sitting in the rain is much riskier, as the sound of the rain can mask the sound of approaching predators. In addition, the wet and muddy ground is very slippery,” she said.

Giraffes can also withstand cold weather well because they have an internal system to regulate their body temperature. The network of blood vessels in the giraffe’s dark spots functions to release and retain heat. The giraffe’s skin on its neck is also much thicker and functions as insulation in cold weather.
