Gibran Inspects MRT Project, HI-Monas Section to Operate by End of 2027
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming on Tuesday (12/5/2026) inspected the construction project of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Phase 2A line, which will connect Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) to Kota Station. This 6-kilometre line will extend the Lebak Bulus-Bundaran HI route that has been operational since 2019.
Wearing full personal protective equipment, the Vice President toured the underground tunnel at a depth of 28 metres that the MRT train will pass through in the Harmoni area, Central Jakarta. He was accompanied by Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, and President Director of PT MRT Jakarta Tuhiyat.
The Vice President stated that the progress of the Bundaran HI-Kota MRT line construction has reached 59%. This route, consisting of seven stations, is targeted to be fully operational in 2029.
Although the construction still requires a long time, the Vice President mentioned that there is an additional line that can soon be enjoyed by Jakarta residents and surrounding areas. “By the end of 2027, Bundaran HI-Monas will be connected and operational,” said Vice President Gibran.
He appreciated the transportation infrastructure development, which is a collaboration project between the central and regional governments. The Vice President is optimistic that this additional MRT line will encourage residents to switch from private vehicles to public transport, ultimately contributing to reducing congestion in Jakarta.
“If the public transport is safe, comfortable, modern, and integrated, I am confident everyone will flock to use public transport.”
“And most importantly, once again, safe and comfortable for children, women, pregnant mothers, the elderly, and people with disabilities,” he emphasised.
President Director of PT MRT Jakarta Tuhiyat added that the construction of MRT Phase 2A is more challenging due to the narrower and denser route. Because of this condition, he said, starting from Harmoni, the tunnel that was previously side-by-side becomes stacked (stacked tunnel).
“Therefore, the depth becomes deeper. Normally 17-18 metres, this becomes 28 metres below because it’s stacked,” said Tuhiyat.
Other challenges include differences in soil structure that is softer and the presence of cultural heritage sites, so the project construction must be carried out very carefully.
The MRT Phase 1 Lebak Bulus-Bundaran HI currently carries 47 million passengers per year. When Phase 2A connected to Kota is completed in 2029, PT MRT projects the passenger capacity to increase to 70 million per year.
