Vice President Gibran Rakabuming responded to the legal case involving human rights activist Andrie Yunus, who was doused with acid by an alleged military member. The Vice President emphasised that the legal process for Andrie must proceed openly and as fairly as possible.

“Justice must be present in a tangible way in society, and the legal process must run honestly, openly, and accountably,” stated the Vice President in a written statement on Thursday (9/4/2026).

Andrie Yunus’s case is currently being handled by the TNI’s Central Legal and Human Rights Enforcement Unit (Puspom TNI). However, Andrie himself has written a letter stating that he does not trust his case being handled through the military court.

In response to this complex case, Vice President Gibran emphasised the importance of involving professionals with proven integrity as ad-hoc judges in the court to ensure a truly objective judicial process and the upholding of justice.

“The direct involvement of professionals with strong track records and integrity as ad-hoc judges in the acid splashing court against Brother Andrie Yunus is very important to maintain public trust and the dignity of the law.”

“We want justice not only to be upheld but also to be believed in by society,” Gibran asserted.

Current Condition of Andrie Yunus

The National Central General Hospital Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM) stated that Andrie’s condition, who suffered 24% burns, shows significant progress during his treatment period. Andrie is scheduled to undergo skin graft surgery.

“The burns experienced by the patient have shown significant improvement, with most of the wound areas having been treated through seeding or skin grafting procedures,” said RSCM’s Legal and Public Relations Manager Yoga Nara in his statement in Jakarta, as quoted by CNN Indonesia, on Thursday (9/4).
