Gibran Attends Proclamation Ceremony Wearing NTT Traditional Attire

Vice President Gibran Rakabuming and Selvi Gibran Rakabuming attended the Proclamation Seconds Commemoration Ceremony in the grounds of Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, 17 August 2026.

Accompanied by their two children, Gibran and Selvi appeared wearing different traditional attire, albeit with a similar dominant colour scheme.

Gibran wore traditional Rote attire from East Nusa Tenggara. The Lafa cloth wrapped around his waist and draped over his shoulder was adorned with the Hua Peni motif, which represents nobility and customary order.

The bold maroon lines dominating the cloth’s pattern represent courage, vitality, and respect for the ancestors.

The black suit worn by the Vice President was also paired with a Ti’i Langga hat, a hat made from dried palm leaves that symbolises strength, honour, and a spirit of leadership. Similar traditional attire was also worn by Jan Ethes Srinarendra and his younger sibling, La Lembah Manah.

Meanwhile, Selvi entered the ceremony venue wearing Ta’a Dayak Kenyah traditional attire from East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan. Featuring the kalong aga motif, the Vice President’s wife’s attire represents simplicity within a soul that is dignified, strong, confident, and connected to nature and the ancestors.

In keeping with the Vice President, Mrs Selvi’s attire was dominated by the colour red, which in Dayak Kenyah tradition reflects spirit, courage in facing life, inner strength, and the determination not to give up easily.

Both sets of traditional attire worn by Gibran and Selvi reflect the spirit of diversity in realising ‘A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia’, in line with the theme of the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.
