Gianyar Regency to Install 500 CCTVs Across 176 Locations Starting 2027
The Gianyar Regency Government is set to expand street surveillance by installing 500 closed-circuit television (CCTV) units at 176 priority intersections starting in 2027. These cameras are intended to monitor areas prone to security disturbances and assist the police in alleviating traffic congestion.
“Every year, we are adding CCTV units. This is an investment in security, because security investment is invaluable,” stated the Regent of Gianyar, I Made Mahayastra, on Saturday (1/8/2026).
Mahayastra explained that each traffic light pole will be equipped with two to three CCTV units. Installation will be prioritised on busy road sections, intersections with heavy traffic, and areas vulnerable to crime. The placement of the cameras will be strategically clustered to ensure that the movement of criminals can be tracked continuously.
“So that if a perpetrator flees, the CCTV can follow and record their direction,” Mahayastra added.
In addition to supporting security, the CCTVs will serve as tools to monitor traffic conditions. Based on the monitoring results, Gianyar Police personnel can be deployed immediately to locations experiencing vehicle density. “It is also for monitoring traffic congestion. Gianyar Police personnel will then guide and disperse the traffic. Therefore, the procurement of these CCTVs is very urgent,” he said.
According to Mahayastra, the installation of CCTVs on Gianyar’s streets has been ongoing for some time and is being carried out gradually. The Gianyar Regency Government has also acquired several plots of land to support the installation, particularly in tourist-heavy areas such as Ubud.
“We are starting bit by bit. Some land has already been acquired, though not in large quantities,” he noted.
Current observations show that fewer than 10 CCTV units are presently installed in the Ubud area. Two units, belonging to the Gianyar Police and the Ubud Agung Palace, face a road intersection, while another unit monitors the junction of Jalan Hanoman and Jalan Monkey Forest. Four units have also been installed at the Teges intersection, specifically at the junction of Jalan Raya Teges and Jalan Raya Cok Rai Pudak, all mounted on traffic light poles.
However, several busy road sections and intersections still lack surveillance, including the Arjuna intersection, the Suweta-Jalan Raya Ubud junction, Jalan Monkey Forest, and the stretch of Jalan Raya Ubud leading towards the Kedewatan intersection. According to information from the Gianyar Transport Agency, the procurement of high-quality CCTV networks and devices requires a budget of approximately IDR 3 billion, with individual network and device costs estimated at around IDR 80 million.
