Gianyar Regency Becomes Candidate for Model Smoke-Free Zone Area
Gianyar, Bali - Gianyar Regency, Bali, is becoming a candidate for a pilot smoke-free zone (KTR) area due to its support for implementing a clean environment, including freedom from tobacco smoke. “We are committed to realising a truly healthy and smoke-free Gianyar,” said Assistant for General Administration of the Regional Secretariat of Gianyar Regency, I Ketut Pasek Lanang Sadia, during a break while receiving assistance from the central government in Gianyar on Tuesday. According to him, as a tourism destination, environmental cleanliness is one of the important factors in supporting tourism appeal, including the creation of a smoke-free environment. To support the implementation of the smoke-free zone, his side is collaborating across regional apparatus. In addition, the implementation of KTR is also strengthened through the Regent’s Regulation No. 51 of 2015 as well as the Regent’s Circular (SE) of Gianyar as a form of policy support in creating a smoke-free environment. Meanwhile, Sekar Astrika Fardani from the Directorate of Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), during the assistance related to the KTR pilot, appreciated the commitment of the Gianyar Regency Government. Such efforts, she said, are part of joint steps to protect the community from exposure to tobacco smoke, create clean air, prevent the emergence of novice smokers, and regulate smoking behaviour in accordance with Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024. Education and socialisation are also continuously encouraged as an important part of implementing the programme. On that occasion, Kemenkes also visited the implementation of KTR covering schools, school children’s public transport, people’s markets, children’s play areas in Gianyar Town Square, places of worship, hospitals, and public service malls.
