Giant Sea Turtle Carcass Stranded on Parangkusumo Beach, Bantul
A jumbo-sized sea turtle was found dead on the edge of Parangkusumo Beach, Kretek, Bantul. The turtle died with its shell broken and its abdomen torn. The SAR team buried the carcass.
The SAR co-ordinator of Satlinmas Rescue Istimewa, Region III Parangtritis, Sektiaji Bagus, said that initially residents were strolling along Parangkusumo Beach around 07:00 local time today. Subsequently, residents found the large turtle on the shore.
“After approaching it, the large turtle was already dead and emitting a foul odour,” he told reporters on Saturday (23 May 2026).
Upon learning of the incident, residents reported it to the Parangtritis SAR Team. In follow-up to the report, the SAR team immediately went to the location where the turtle was found.
“From the initial identification, the turtle measured 101 cm in length, 51 cm in width and 102 cm in diameter. Meanwhile, the turtle’s shell was broken and its abdomen torn,” he said.
Sektiaji revealed that after the initial identification, the SAR team estimated that the turtle’s time of death was more than a day ago.
“We buried the turtle immediately because it was emitting a foul odour,” he added.
Regarding the species, Sektiaji said he did not yet know. However, it is likely the turtle was carried by the sea current and eventually stranded on Parangkusumo Beach.
