Giant dragon in lantern display

JAKARTA (JP): A pair of giant dragons made of 400,000 small glass bottles and weighing about five tons is the highlight of hundreds of Chinese lanterns that went on display at the Jakarta Fair Grounds last night.

Nugroho Aditomo of PT Jakarta International Trade Fair Corporation said that the lanterns were originally scheduled to appear during the one-month Jakarta Fair from June 14 to July 13 but were postponed for technical reasons.

The lanterns were designed by the China-Indonesia Friendship Chinese Lantern team.

Others include fortune gates, phoenix dragons, a pair of dragons on a lake, a pair of peacocks, seven angels bathing in a lake, the Al Ahzar grand mosque and the Monday Monument, he said.

Nugroho said that the delay was caused mainly by difficulties in transporting the equipment from Seechuan, China.

The lanterns will be lit every day until Sept. 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Tickets cost Rp 10,000 (US$3.84) each. (hhr)
