GI Tourism: A New Way to Experience Dieng
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law conducted a Geographical Indication (GI) Tourism route trial in the Dieng area, spanning Wonosobo and Banjarnegara, Central Java, from 21–23 September 2026.
Visiting Dieng is usually synonymous with enjoying the scenery, taking photographs, staying overnight, and bringing home souvenirs. However, the GI Tourism route trial offers a different experience: getting to know the natural wealth, traditions, and local wisdom of the community from upstream to downstream.
The first day of the journey began in Gagot Village, Banjarnegara Regency. Trial participants were welcomed with traditional dances and the draping of batik scarves, which are handcrafted by the local community.
While enjoying the sounds of the gamelan, organisers provided traditional snacks and drinks, including boiled bananas, peanuts, getuk, coffee, warm tea, and ginger tea (wedang jahe). Local delicacies were also served, such as nasi tiwul, nasi jagung, rice cakes cooked in husks (ketupat bakar sekam), ayam petis, and buntil tahu.
“Visit Banjarnegara, a beautiful, sparkling city. The asphalt is smooth, the roads are even. Just as we tend to a garden with colourful flowers,” sang a snippet from a Javanese song performed by a sinden on the morning of 21 September.
Preserving nature and the environment remains a core part of the local wisdom in Gagot Village. A proverb written on a wooden board hanging in the area reads, “Nandur wit dadi duint” (planting trees becomes money).
Philosophy of the Dieng farmer’s conical hat
This opening journey serves as a gateway to recognising Dieng as more than just a tourist destination, while simultaneously observing the living philosophy of its people.
