Ghost of the New Order regime?

Ghost of the New Order regime?

From Rakyat Merdeka

Nobody knows for sure when the monetary and political crises
will end, but what seems clear is that the people are getting
poorer and poorer. I still remember when Sukarno was named
president for life, that no body dared protest against him
because only very few people dared to criticize his policies.

Then Soeharto came to power. Regretfully, many of his cronies
stayed in power when Soeharto was brought down, a condition which
was different from the Sukarno regime: Sukarno was toppled along
with all his cronies in 1965.

Soeharto even bequeathed his presidential seat to B.J.
Habibie, his protege, and until the 1999 general elections, the
Soeharto regime continued to exist under the mask of the Reform
Order.

The people and university students wanted to have a new
generation of politicians in government and to cut the link with
the New Order. Leaders of the future must not come from power-
hungry political parties.

If the Megawati administration lasts until the next 2004
election, it will only mean perpetuating the suffering of the
people.
